Welcome Spring with Skagerak’s new arrivals

Steel only

The furniture company Skagerak Denmark introduces a series of new spring arrivals made in both familiar and new materials, brought to life by some of the most experienced and innovative designers from Germany, Sweden and Denmark. Are you itching to get your hands dirty, or would you rather enjoy spring’s first warm sunbeams from the sideline, immersed in that book you have been waiting to read for months? Either way, Skagerak’s new products in metal, wood and hardwearing textiles make you want to welcome spring with open arms and high expectations.

There is a first time for everything – even when you have existed in almost 40 years – and this year Skagerak presents their first products created in pure steel. Two designers’ distinctive approaches to working with steel have breathed life into a range of new and exciting products which all can be useful in both indoor and outdoor spaces. The Mira collection designed by Mia Lagerman consists of tables and chairs in powder coated steel with a delicate mesh pattern that highlights the construction of the frame. Maximilian Schmahl’s Bow Table, a folding table in two heights, is likewise produced in powder coated steel, and the simple tabletop gives the collection a minimalistic expression that goes well together with most other objects and styles in the home.

Comfort and aesthetics tailored to the Nordic weather

Skagerak has been working with the patented and oeko-tex® certified Barriere® textile for several years now, and to meet a growing demand they have developed two brand new outdoor textiles; Barriere Panama and Barriere Liso. These textiles are woven in 100% dyed acrylic fibre, are hard-wearing and have increased UV resistance. Despite the great variety of expressions and designs, many of Skagerak’s spring arrivals are sharing the predilection for the Barriere textile. That applies for example to Povl Eskildsen’s new Tradition Lounge Chair which is an extension to his Tradition Series that was launched in the beginning of 2015. Says Who has also found inspiration in the textile and brought up the outdoor sofa Mojo, characterized by its masculine edge and Scandinavian precision.

Then we got Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm’s elegant Hang Chair – a reinterpretation of the classical deckchair. Hang Chair stands out with its stable frame and padded seat in Barriere Panama that makes it perfectly suitable for the rather unpredictable Nordic spring weather. Lastly is Skagerak introducing a number of pillows in Barriere Panama; stain and mildew-resistant and made out of a fast-drying foam core, fitting the new lounge furniture impeccably.

Green fingers with Skagerak

Like most human beings, flowers and plants are just as eager to soak up the spring sunshine and to help them on their way Mia Lagerman has designed the small and portable greenhouse, Spira, where you can pre-sprout your plants until they are ready for the garden. The entire front of Spira Greenhouse lifts up like a lid to provide easy access and makes it suitable for both indoor and outdoor usage. In the same series you find Spira Growth Table which forms a smooth work surface in steel, with a practical shelf underneath in a simple and semi-rustic expression in materials that will stand up to wind and weather. When the Spira Greenhouse has served its purpose, you can easily move your plants to Skagerak’s Edge Pots designed by Stilleben. The Edge Series consists of simple and stylish terracotta pots in various sizes, inspired by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians vases and reinterpreted in a Scandinavian version

Collaboration across the sound

Skagerak has entered a collaboration with the Swedish design office TAF Architects, which has led to quite a few remarkable projects. Behind TAF Architects you find Mattias Ståhlbom and Gabrielle Gustafson. For 13 years, the duo has created an impressive catalogue of modern Scandinavian classics in lighting, furniture and interiors. Their demand for quality in both design and materials corresponds well with Skagerak’s headstrong principle of offering products that adapt to the surroundings and withstand the ravages of time. This can be seen in their latest design – Overlap – a table and bench set made for the volatile Scandinavian spring weather with painted steel legs and rustic Western Red Cedar planks that only gets more beautiful with added patina.

When darkness falls

It is quite easy to get carried away by the cheerful spring weather, but one should not forget that the temperature quickly drops as soon as the sun has set. Therefore, Skagerak has come up with a handful of solutions to how you can make yourself just a tad more comfortable and get more out of the chilly spring evenings. Wrapped up in Iota Blankets, the evenings suddenly becomes less daunting, and most people will have no problems with finding at least one good reason for staying out an hour more. The design duo Halstrøm–Odgaard has found inspiration in the name Iota, the ninth letter in the Greek alphabet, and created a blanket with a minimalistic pattern made of sublimely soft merino wool in three specially designed colors. As the dusk slowly settles, Anton Björsing’s wooden Drop Candle Holder comes into its own and VE2’s Nordic Teapot from the Nordic Series may be your helpful servant when you need a hot cup of tea to relax after a busy day.
