Overlap is this year’s
Last night, Skagerak’s Overlap series was named Outdoor Furniture of the Year 2017, as Elle Decoration Sweden held their yearly award show at the iconic venue Berns Salonger in Stockholm. Overlap, consisting of a bench and table set plus a new round-table, has its name from the construction of the legs and is made from the most sturdy and weatherproof materials that ages gracefully.
Last year, Skagerak unveiled a new collaboration with the Swedish Designstudio TAF Architects which has been working in a creative mix of architecture and design for now 15 years with Gabriella Gustafson and Mattias Ståhlbom in charge.
The first result of this new Danish-Swedish relation was the Overlap bench and table set – created in a simple, solid and tenacious design perfect for the outdoor space, but just as beautiful in an indoor setting. Powder coated steel legs that overlap in the construction – hence the name – carries the solid wooden planks made from Western Red Cedar – a light but very sturdy type of wood that patinates with a silver-grey nuance over time.
Recently, Skagerak presented a new addition to its Overlap series – the new round tables in the Overlap series is available in two sizes and designed with a tabletop in compact laminate; a sturdy and waterproof material with little need for maintenance. The three steel legs are similar to the bench and table set – folded and overlapping in the structure. The simplistic expression ensures that the roundtable fits into both indoor and outdoor settings and matches various types of stools and chairs.
With the award of Outdoor Furniture of the Year, Skagerak and TAF Architects have made it clear, that thinking long term and making an effort is definitely possible without compromising on aesthetics and functionality.
As winner at ELLE Deco Sweden’s award show, Overlap will proceed to EDIDA – ELLE Deco International Awards Show – which is held in Milano every year during the Salon del Mobile furniture fair and is considered to be the design world’s answer to the Oscars.
