SKAGERAK JOINS THE B-CORP MOVEMENT
As the first bigger company in Denmark, Skagerak has become a certified B Corporation for its way of running its business. Skagerak thus joins an ambitious movement and community of local and global companies trying to redefine success in business by putting humans and the planet before profit.
PROFIT AND RESPONSIBILITY – CONTRADICTIONS OR PREREQUISITS?
Since the beginning of the 21st century, one important question has become increasingly important to answer when it comes to business and economic growth – what is the exact relation between profit and responsibility? This is largely due to the fact that we have become more aware of how climate change and resource scarcity on the one hand, and urbanization as well as a growing global middle class on the other sets the world as we know it today under profound pressure.
In contrast to the prevalent perception, a new understanding of economic growth and sustainability as each other’s prerequisites – not opposites – has started to emerge. Since 2007, the non-profit organization B Lab has been certifying companies which do not just think, but also act responsibly. Companies which adhere to the highest standards in terms of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. Companies able to document the positive effect of their business models for not just typical shareholders, but also employees throughout the whole supply chain, (local) communities and the environment as a whole.
Skagerak thus joins a strong and fast growing community of more than 2.000 B Corporations which with frontrunners such as Patagonia, Danone and Ben & Jerry’s are becoming living proofs that the most sustainable business model is the one creating profit from being the best FOR the world, not IN the world. Hence, B-Corp represents a significant change of paradigm, where egoism and altruism no longer should or can be separated; doing good for others and doing good for one self is practically one and the same thing.
