A synthesis of form, colours, materials, and functionality
Skagerak and the Halstrøm | Odgaard design duo launch the Vivlio shelf system that sets a new standard for using the interplay between form, colour, and functionality to create exciting new solutions. The new flexible shelving system is the result of an outstanding collaboration between the designers and Skagerak, based on a balance between curiosity and regard for materials.
The designers Margrethe Odgaard and Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm put their heads together for the first time back in 2013. Both were driven by curiosity and a desire to learn more about how the use of colours and patterns can affect functions, materials, and forms – and vice versa. With furniture and textile design as their respective specialties, the duo constantly strives to combine knowledge and experience from various fields to explore the relationship between colours, shapes, and functionality. ‘We have no doubts that expressions as well as objects have emerged that would never have seen the light of day if we had merely been working separately’ – says Margrethe Odgaard, whose primary concern is textile design.
The two women design both in their own names and as the duo Halstrøm | Odgaard, and it is a pivotal point for them both to make the dynamics of their experimentation result in a focus on functionality for the user. Today, in collaboration with the Skagerak design brand, they are ready to present the Vivlio shelf system, their latest proof that bringing together knowledge from two worlds can lead to the creation of exciting new solutions. With Vivlio, Halstrøm | Odgaard have given life to a flexible shelving solution which elegantly invites the user to participate actively in creating the final expression.
It is no coincidence that the shelving unit is presented in collaboration with Skagerak. The Danish design company has a long tradition of creating the best possible settings to allow their collaborators to challenge current fashions and market trends. A central element of the Skagerak approach to furniture design is their insistence that first-class materials must always play a crucial role in the development of new solutions. With that approach, they have created an environment where they seek to push the frontiers to integrate new shapes, colours and patterns into design without compromising on materials or functionality.
So Vibeke and Jesper Panduro, who are behind Skagerak, had no doubts that the Halstrøm | Odgaard duo should be added to their circle of design partners. Particularly important was the duo’s approach to development and design in their joint products, and the previous collaboration between Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm and Skagerak that has, among other things, led to the well-recognized Georg Series.
’We are very pleased with Vivlio’s final expression. Throughout the process, it has been very important to us that the shelving system reflects the wish for flexible solutions that is highly requested among our customers’ – states Jesper Panduro, and continues, ’As the unit’s shelves can be combined and turned to adapt form as well as colour to individual needs, we have very much succeeded with our project.’
