Several Fridays during summer the Karstad family of six leave their apartment in busy Copenhagen and head for their summer cabin in Tisvildeleje. “The first thing we do when we arrive is to drop off our luggage, open the doors and go to the garden,” says chef and father of four Mikkel Karstad and continues “here it seems more okay to take a small nap or simply just listen to the birds.”

The family spend many hours outside gathering around their Skagerak Skagen Table which has developed a beautiful patina over the years – often with good friends and family. “Food is a very central subject in our family and in Tisvildeleje we often go to the beach or the wood to collect ingredients for cooking. The kids also take part in this – something we have done for many years. I guess it has almost become a family tradition,” says Mikkel.

“When we are in Tisvildeleje we often collect ingredients for my dad’s cooking. Chanterelles, rosehip, vegetables and the like,” says Alma Karstad.

“It’s so nice to leave all those daily activities like doing the laundry, vacuum or rush home from work. When we leave the daily rush we can really be together as a family,” says Camilla Karstad.
